What the numbers mean

Median household income

The middle point: half of households in the zip earn more, half earn less. It's the most reliable single snapshot of a neighborhood's income.

Six-figure households

The share earning $100,000 or more, and the share earning $200,000 or more, shows how much high-income wealth is concentrated in the area.

Income spread

The 16 income ranges show whether a zip is mostly middle class, mixed, or split between high and low earners.

Where the data comes from

Every number comes from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey 5-year estimates, the most detailed income data published for every zip code in the country. Zip codes are based on Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, which match the large majority of mailing zip codes. PO box only zip codes don't have their own data.
