About Wealth by Zip

Wealth by Zip helps people understand income and wealth where they live, one zip code at a time.

What we do

Income data is public, but it's usually buried in giant spreadsheets. We turn it into clear rankings, comparisons, and tools, so you can see where you stand, which neighborhoods earn the most, and how places compare before you move, buy, or open a business.

Where our data comes from

Our income, home value, and rent figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates. We currently use the 2020 to 2024 release, the newest available. The ACS surveys millions of households and is the only source that publishes detailed income data for every zip code in the United States.

How we handle the numbers

  • Zip codes: The Census reports data for ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs), which closely match mailing zip codes. Some mailing zips, like PO boxes, have no ZCTA.
  • Rankings: We rank by median household income and include only zip codes with at least 1,000 residents, because very small areas produce less reliable estimates.
  • Top-coded values: The Census caps median household income at $250,000 and median home value at $2,000,000. We show these as "$250,000+" and "$2,000,000+".
  • Zip code lookup: Our Zip Code Income Lookup shows each zip code's median household income and how its households are spread across the Census's 16 income ranges.
